KMPDU’s Davji Atellah outlines key terms of Kiambu doctors’ return-to-work deal
Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Davji Atellah has shared the full details of the agreement that officially ended the five-month doctors’ strike in Kiambu County.
In an update posted on his X account on Friday, October 24, 2025, Atellah confirmed that the union and the County Government of Kiambu had signed a Return-to-Work Formula, bringing to an end a standoff that had crippled healthcare services in the county since May.
“After five months of steadfast struggle, principled engagement, and unwavering solidarity, we have today signed a Return-to-Work Formula with the County Government of Kiambu, officially bringing the industrial action to a close,” Atellah said.
He noted that the agreement contains several critical provisions aimed at addressing long-standing grievances raised by doctors and ensuring sustainable industrial peace.
Among the agreed-upon terms is the assurance of timely salary disbursement, with the county committing to pay salaries when due and to communicate any delays to the union formally.
Promotions that had been stalled will now be expedited job groups M to P within two weeks, and Q to S within six weeks, in accordance with public service rules.
The county also pledged to maintain continuous medical insurance cover for all doctors and to remit statutory health deductions before the 9th of every month to avoid disruption in medical services.
Transfer policies will be published within seven days, while all pending allowances will be cleared promptly.
A structured framework will be implemented to ensure compliance with the 40-hour work week, with overtime recognised for doctors working on-call. The county will also reinstate the deduction and remittance of union dues as mandated by law.
Atellah further said the agreement includes safeguards to protect doctors and union officials from any form of punishment or arbitrary transfer due to their involvement in the strike. One month’s salary will be paid immediately upon their return to work.
He added that both parties agreed to withdraw all pending court cases and contempt proceedings as part of the peace deal.
“This agreement is a testament to what unity, persistence, and collective bargaining can achieve. We remain vigilant in ensuring full implementation of every clause signed today,” Atellah stated.
“To the doctors of Kiambu: your resilience has defended not only your rights but also the right of every patient to be served by a dignified, motivated, and protected healthcare worker. To the County Government: we welcome this renewed commitment to good-faith dialogue and accountability,” he added.
“As we return to our stations within 24 hours, we do so with heads held high. When health workers are respected, healthcare works.”
The doctors’ strike, which began on May 26, 2025, had severely affected operations in county hospitals, with many patients left without access to critical medical services.
The resolution followed days of intense discussions between KMPDU officials, the Council of Governors, and the Kiambu County Government.
Governor Kimani Wamatangi hailed the end of the strike, saying the agreement marked a fresh start for the health sector in Kiambu. Doctors are expected to resume duty by Monday, October 27, 2025.
