The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has raised concerns with the deteriorating conditions of doctors in Kisii County, urging the county government to intervene to resolve the problems that still plague the medical fraternity.

Taking it to his social media handles on Friday, March 6, 2026, KMPDU secretary general Davji Atela has said that the union, on Thursday, March 5, 2026, held a meeting with doctors across the country to discuss the state of their working lives and their advancement in the recent past.

In his address to the meeting, KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah reiterated his union’s commitment to continue fighting for the welfare of doctors.

He identified major priorities such as full execution of basic salary increases, payment of the last tranche of arrears between 2024 and 2025 and negotiation of a more respectable 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

“We reflected on how far we have come. In 2021, many doctors in Kisii felt hopeless and disillusioned. Today, there is renewed confidence in union leadership, from the branch level to the national office, and a shared belief in the power of collective action.

“Together, we have secured important gains: promotions, study leave, payment of basic salary arrears, reduced University of Nairobi fees, the employment of more doctors, and stipends for registrars, among others,” Davji’s statement read.

The secretary general has termed the meeting a spirited one, an open and very encouraging one, with rejuvenated faith in the leadership of the union at the branch and national levels.

He also confirmed that the members admitted that some years back in 2021, most doctors were disillusioned and hopeless due to stalled promotions, low wages, and fewer career development opportunities.

The KMPDU argued that even with the notable achievements, the county is still struggling with issues such as promotions, approvals of study leaves, basic salary arrears, hiring of more doctors and stipends paid to registrars despite notable improvements.

The KMPDU has said that key problems are not yet resolved. Among the biggest issues are the dwindling locum rates; many physicians indicate that the current rates are lower than those advised by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).

The Secretary General further said that it is also quite urgent to seek more permanent employees, and those already working in the county on locum contracts should be the first priority since it will allow the county to support the increased needs.
