The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has strongly criticised the arrest and detention of Job Obwaka, an 83-year-old obstetrician and gynaecologist, who serves on the board of The Nairobi Hospital.

Police arrested Obwaka on the morning of Saturday, March 14, 2026, outside the NSSF Building in Nairobi, where his clinic operates. Authorities later transferred him to Muthaiga Police Station, where he remained in custody.

KMPDU issued a statement the same day, signed by Secretary General Davji Bhimji Atellah, condemning the arrest as “under unclear and disturbing circumstances.” The union said the medical community was deeply shocked.

“An injury to one doctor is an injury to all,” Atellah added.

The union said Obwaka was accused of falsifying the register of members, a responsibility that belongs to the Office of the Company Secretary.

“It is important to note that Dr Obwaka was not present at the time when the alleged irregularities in these records are said to have occurred,” the statement read. KMPDU argued this raised “serious questions about the basis and fairness of the accusations being levelled against him.”

Bail denied amid concerns

Authorities reportedly refused to grant cash bail, despite the claimed offence qualifying as bailable under Kenyan law. Sources say the refusal followed “instructions from above.” KMPDU described this as troubling and warned it raised “legitimate concerns regarding due process, fairness, and the possible misuse of state power against a senior member of the medical profession.”

The union made four clear demands:

1. Treat Obwaka with dignity, fairness, and full respect for his constitutional rights.
2. Clarify immediately the circumstances of his arrest and detention.
3. Follow due legal process, including granting bail as Kenyan law allows.
4. Ensure investigative agencies pursue justice without intimidation, harassment, or undue influence.

KMPDU highlighted Obwaka’s status as a senior citizen, decorated medical professional, and respected figure in Kenya’s medical community.

“Any investigation must proceed transparently, lawfully, and with the utmost respect for his rights and reputation,” the union said. Atellah called on the public and medical fraternity to remain “calm but vigilant as we continue to seek clarity and justice in this matter.”
