A section of Kenyans on Twitter have castigated Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria over recent remarks he uttered during a religious congregation in Embu on Sunday, June 18, 2023.

On Monday, June 19, 2023, Kuria tweeted saying that he had met the Business Process Outsourcing and the Big Tech Companies, following the EU-Kenya agreement that took place earlier in the morning.

According to Kuria, he met the two parties to discuss the way forward, to scale up the Digital Economy and Digital Expatriation to the rest of the world.

“Kenya is well positioned to become Africa’s Gate Way to the digital economy due to our balance of talent and the social economic stability and high education level,” the tweet read.

Kuria went ahead to state that the meeting resulted into an agreement between the parties in attendance, that they were going to “create employment for the young by revamping the digital economy”.

“We have agreed to spur this economy to greater levels and create employment opportunities for millions of our young talented Kenyans. For the first time in our country the Government of Kenya is going to recognize BPOs as Special Economic Enterprises,” Kuria added.

In his tweet, the Trade CS also highlighted the government’s intention to work in partnership with higher learning institutions, in an effort to update the curriculum to match the current technology in the digital world.

“In addition, we will also partner with our local universities and ensure that we review our curriculum to fit the demands of the Tech Industry,” Kuria’s tweet read.

Kuria’s online blow

In his speech in Embu yesterday, Kuria attacked Nation Media House for linking him to the illegal oil exportation scandal that saw private companies make imports duty-free, pocketing millions of money as profit.

Kuria said that “Nation Media should decide whether they are a newspaper, media house or a political party.”

The CS later tweeted that the only advertisers who should approach Nation Media house for advertisement.

The tweet by Moses Kuria on the digital economy saw Kenyans on Twitter react negatively with many telling him to resign, some telling him to go to rehab and some just throwing insults. A tweep also accused him of corruption and misappropriation of public funds.

However, a drop in the ocean congratulated him for his good work, with one telling him to ignore his critics.

Here are some reactions:-

Kenya Union of Journalists

The Kenya Union of Journalists issued a statement on Monday, June 19, 2023, condemning the media attacks by Moses Kuria.

“We would wish to remind Mr Kuria that he is now a Cabinet Secretary whose actions and utterances should promote positive image of Kenya as a nation. In line with tenets of leadership and integrity law,” the statement read in part.

“His reactions to media reports regarding one of the many scandals that have hit Kenya Kwanza administration within a span of 10 months, are not only embarrassment to Kenyans, but a confirmation that his stomach is full and can belch and eventually vomit on the shoes of hungry Kenyans with impunity.”
