Kenyan Parliament seeks to follow in Uganda’s footsteps
Despite the outrage over the passage of the anti-homosexuality law in Uganda, Kenya faces a similar situation should lawmakers approve a bill prohibiting same-sex marriages.
MPs who are supposed to resume sittings next week, are expected to deal with the Family Protection Draft bill 2023 sponsored by Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma (right).
The bill, which was being considered by the Budget and Appropriations Committee, seeks to prohibit homosexuality, same sex marriage, unnatural sexual acts and related activities. It also seeks to proscribe activities that seek to promote or fund homosexuality.
It prescribes various offences ranging from ten years to life imprisonment to individuals engage or promote same sex marriages.
The proposed bill also seeks to void any purported marriage or other form of union that took place between persons or sexual partners of the same sex.
“A certificate issued by a foreign authority of a purported marriage or other form of union between persons or sexual partners of the same sex is unenforceable in Kenya,” the bill says.
