Kenya, UK deepen ties to boost universal healthcare
Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming its healthcare system through strategic global partnerships, as Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale hosted a high-level UK parliamentary delegation at Afya House to discuss joint efforts in advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Led by Michael Payne, the UK delegation was in Nairobi on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, to explore avenues for collaboration under Kenya’s ambitious health reform agenda.
The discussions focused on strengthening healthcare financing, supporting local manufacturing of essential health products, and enhancing emergency response systems.
“Our government is committed to achieving UHC through the Taifa Care Model and the Social Health Insurance Fund,” Duale said.
“I highlighted the critical role of Global Fund support in providing free access to HIV, TB, and malaria services for Kenyans.”
The meeting brought together senior Kenyan health officials and international development partners. Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni and Director General for Health Patrick Amoth joined CS Duale in hosting the visiting delegation, which also included Tim Roca, Eduarda Mendonça-Gray from the British High Commission, and Global Fund Senior Portfolio Manager Paul MacCarrick.

Duale emphasised the need to expand investments in Kenya’s healthcare infrastructure to reduce dependency on imports and improve emergency care.
“We must expand investment in the local manufacturing of essential health products and technologies to ensure sustainability and timely access,” he noted.
“We also discussed the urgent need for a dedicated emergency medical treatment fund, particularly for cancer care and other time-sensitive interventions.”
Digital transformation in healthcare also featured prominently in the dialogue, with the CS underscoring Kenya’s intention to leverage technology in service delivery and health data management.

“Our partnership with the UK will also support the digital transformation of the healthcare system, which is critical in improving efficiency, transparency, and patient outcomes,” he added.
The visit reflects growing diplomatic cooperation between Kenya and the UK, with health emerging as a top priority in bilateral relations.
CS Duale said continued collaboration with key partners like the Global Fund and the UK Government will accelerate Kenya’s path toward equitable, accessible, and affordable healthcare for all.
“Our transformative health agenda cannot succeed without partnerships. This engagement marks another step forward in building a resilient and people-centred health system,” he asserted.
