Kenya Railways Corporation has issued a public notice alerting motorists and residents to a temporary traffic disruption on Moi Avenue in Mombasa.

According to Kenya Railways’ post on X dated Friday, February 27, 2026, the closure is required to carry out urgent emergency repair works on the Mombasa Rail Over Road Bridge, a critical structure where the railway line crosses the busy road.

The affected section extends from the Moi Avenue-Tanganyika Road roundabout to the Moi Avenue-Mogadishu Road area. This portion of Moi Avenue serves as a key artery in Mombasa’s central business district, connecting port access points, commercial zones, and residential areas.

The bridge, an older infrastructure element, requires immediate repairs to ensure both road and rail safety as commuters continue to use the link train from Miritini to Mombasa CBD.

Repair works and alternative routes

The maintenance works are scheduled for Sunday, March 1, 2026, from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The four-hour window is aimed at reducing peak-hour disruptions while addressing potential structural issues promptly.

Kenya Railways emphasised the urgency of the repairs, noting that timely intervention is essential to prevent further hazards or interruptions to train services.

To assist commuters, alternative routes have been provided. Motorists travelling from KPA Gate 10 and the Docks area are advised to use Mogadishu Road, Zanzibar Road, and Shimanzi Road.

Those heading to the KPA Gate 10 and Docks area should follow Tanganyika Road, Mijikenda Street, Lumumba Road, and Shimanzi Road. Kenya Railways urged drivers to adhere to on-site traffic management, follow instructions from police officers and marshals, and exercise caution during the closure.

The corporation expressed regret for any inconvenience caused, noting that these essential works are critical for long-term safety and efficiency.

Kenya Railways reiterated its commitment to public safety and minimal disruption during the intervention, underscoring the role of the bridge in supporting Mombasa’s economy and maintaining reliable transport links in the region.
