Kenya Railways announces introduction of Voi night stopovers
Kenya Railways has announced the introduction of stopovers in the night train in Voi beginning Sunday, December 15, 2024.
In a statement on Friday, December 13, 2024, Kenya Railways noted that pursuant to a presidential directive, the night train from either Mombasa to Nairobi or Nairobi to Mombasa would be making a three-minute stopover in Voi.
“Kenya Railways is pleased to announce that effective December 15, 2024, the 10 pm Madaraka Express Passenger Service train to and from Nairobi Terminus, will now make a 3-minute stopover at Voi station,” Kenya Railways said.
Adding; “The train from Nairobi Terminus to Mombasa will stop at Voi station from 2:05 am to 2:08 am, while the train from Mombasa Terminus to Nairobi will make a stopover from 11:45 pm to 11:48 pm.”
During his trip to Taita-Taveta County on December 4, 2024, President William Ruto directed that the night train makes a stop in Voi to boost businesspeople.
“I have directed the Transport Ministry, and they have confirmed that from December 15, the train will start the night stopover in Voi,” Ruto said.
SGR trips
Usually, the standard-Gauge Railway (SGR) has three trips it makes in a day, beginning with a morning trip which departs Nairobi at 8:00 am, makes stops at Athi River, Emali, Kibwezi, Mtito-Andei and Voi at 12:02 pm. The train also makes stops at Miasenyi and Mariakani before arriving at Mombasa’s Miritini Station at 2:00 pm.
Also, the Mombasa morning train leaves the coastal city at 8:00 am, makes stopovers at Mariakani, Maisenyi and Voi for 6 minutes before making other stops at Mtito-Andei, Kibwezi, Emali, Athi-River before arriving in Nairobi at 2:10 pm.
Also, the SGR express train which normally leaves Nairobi at 3:00 pm makes the only stopover in Voi at 6:48 pm before heading to Mombasa to arrive at 10:08 pm.
Similarly, the Mombasa-Nairobi express train also makes the only stopover in Voi at 4:38 pm before arriving in Nairobi at 8:18 pm.
The new development will mean the Mombasa to Nairobi train will experience a three-minute delay and arrive at the capital at 3:38 am as opposed to the earlier arrival time of 3:35 am.
Equally, the Nairobi-Mombasa night train leaving the city at 10:00 pm will also arrive at the Miritini Train Station at 3:38 am due to the stopovers.
