Kenya Power announces blackout in parts of Nyeri on Friday, January 16
By Mabonga Makhanu, January 16, 2026Residents and businesses in parts of Nyeri County should prepare for a scheduled power interruption on Friday, January 16, 2026, as Kenya Power Lighting Company (KPLC) carries out planned maintenance works in the Mt Kenya Region.
According to the notice shared by the utility company on Thursday, January 15, 2025, the power outage will affect areas within Gachatha, Wamagana, and Kariguini. The maintenance is scheduled to take place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., during which the electricity supply will be temporarily unavailable.
The areas expected to be affected include Kaiguri Safaricom Booster, Kihora, Gachatha Market and Coffee Factory, Mbaaini, Wamagana, Kwa Joseph, Kariguini, Masaku, and their adjacent customers.
The planned maintenance is part of routine network improvement efforts aimed at enhancing the reliability and efficiency of electricity supply in the region. Residents and business owners are advised to make necessary arrangements to minimise inconvenience during the outage period.

Past power cut-offs
Meanwhile, parts of Nyeri County in the Mt Kenya Region will also experience outages.
The affected areas include Kiandere, Gitero, and Karia, covering Karia, parts of Kiamwathi, Kwa Tailor, Gatini, Gitero Market, Kwa Nderi, Gitero Polytechnic, Joma, Muthuaini Secondary School, Muthuaini Market, Muthuaini Coffee Factory, Kiamaguru, Gathima, Tetu TVC, Kagwathi Market, and adjacent customers.

“Karia, parts of Kiamwathi, Kwa Tailor, Gatini, Gitero Mkt, Kwa Nderi, Gitero Polytechnic, Joma, Muthuaini Sec Sch, Muthuaini Mkt, Muthuaini C/Factory, Kiamaguru, Gathima, Tetu TVC, Kagwathi Mkt & adjacent customers,” read the statement in part.
KPLC’s advice to users
Kenya Power emphasised that planned outages are essential for long-term service improvement. “It is necessary to interrupt supply periodically to facilitate maintenance and upgrade of power lines to the network,” a standard company statement reads.
The utility urged affected customers to plan, apologising in advance for any inconvenience. “We regret the inconvenience this may cause and appeal to those affected to bear with us as we carry out the essential works,” the notice added.
Residents are encouraged to charge devices, stock up on essentials, and use alternative power sources where possible.
The scheduled interruption comes amid ongoing efforts to enhance grid stability and expand access, particularly as electricity demand peaks during the festive season.
