Kenya Kwanza turns heat on Raila over hacking claims
The Kenya Kwanza coalition is now calling on opposition leader Raila Odinga to come out and defend himself on claims that he tried to hack elections systems in the last general elections using hackers contracted from Israel.
A section of MPs led by Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Kimani Ichung’wa (pictured)accused the opposition leader of spreading falsehoods that the presidential election was rigged while indeed it was him who had hatched such plans.
“Raila himself has come out to explain how he contracted the hackers to help him rig the elections, it is high time that he tells the world what he wanted to achieve. He has been spreading lies knowing very well it was him who had schemed to steal the election,” Ichungwá told a press conference at Parliament Buildings yesterday.
He added: “ Raila should now come out and denounce his lies now that the hacking scheme has come out.”
Reports have emerged that a group of Israeli disinformation contractors hacked into email and social media accounts of senior election officials and President William Ruto’s close allies just days before the 2022 polls.
A consortium of journalists across the world has been investigating how Israeli national Tal Hanan led a team of disinformation experts in manipulating dozens of elections across the world.
The journalists posed as potential clients and held several meetings with the Israelis, some of which were secretly recorded.
Details of the investigation and findings of the international consortium of journalists have been revealed in a series of stories published by the UK-based media outlet, The Guardian.
Protest rallies
Ruto’s digital campaign strategist Dennis Itumbi was one of two Ruto allies who had their social media accounts hacked.
Itumbi told People Daily that indeed his Telegram account was hacked and used to join several political groups.
I, however, managed to beat them into their own game by giving out information which was contrary to what was happening on the ground,” he said.
Yesterday, the over 30 MPs claimed that Raila was planning to cause chaos in the Central Business District under the guise of the prayers set for Monday outside the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
They urged the government to rein in the opposition leaders and their supporters should they interfere with properties and businesses of Kenyans during their demonstrations.
“Raila has realised his protest rallies are not working and wants to result to chaos to try the government, we urge the state apparatus not to allow him cause instability and instead work ruthlessly on the economic saboteurs,” said Kilifi North MP Owen Baya, who is also the Deputy Leader of Majority.
The ODM leader has planned for a prayer meeting outside the IEBC offices in the CBD as he pushes for his crusade for electoral reforms.
