Kenya, Italy sign MoU on sustainable fisheries and blue economy research

Kenya and Italy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance sustainable fisheries, renewable energy solutions for aquaculture, and research collaboration in the Blue Economy.

In a statement posted on her X account on Sunday, February 8, 2026, Principal Secretary for the Blue Economy and Fisheries Betsy Njagi said the agreement was signed during the official launch of the Med-Or Italian Foundation Africa Office in Nairobi.

“We also signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance sustainable fisheries, renewable energy solutions for aquaculture, and research collaboration in the Blue Economy,” Njagi stated.

Deepening bilateral relations

Njagi, who represented the Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, and Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, at the launch event, described the launch and the signing of the agreement as a significant step in deepening bilateral relations between the two countries.

“Today I represented the Cabinet Secretary for Mining Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs Hassan Ali Joho at the official launch of the Med-Or Italian Foundation Africa Office in Nairobi, in the presence of H.E. Anna Maria Bernini, Italy’s Minister of University and Research, marking a key milestone in strengthening the Kenya–Italy partnership,” Njagi said.

Sustainable development

According to the Principal Secretary, the MoU will focus on advancing sustainable fisheries management, promoting renewable energy solutions to support aquaculture, and enhancing research collaboration within the blue economy sector.

She noted that the areas of cooperation are aligned with Kenya’s broader efforts to unlock the economic potential of its marine and aquatic resources while ensuring environmental sustainability.

The PS described the partnership as reflecting shared commitment between Kenya and Italy on sustainable development and innovation, particularly in sectors that are increasingly critical to food security, job creation and climate resilience.

“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to sustainable development, innovation, and strengthening international cooperation for the benefit of our communities and future generations,” Njagi stated.
