Kenya explores US partnership to expand kidney care

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, has on Thursday, February 5, 2026, met with U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Susan Burns and a delegation from the Africa Healthcare Network (AHN) to discuss ways of expanding access to chronic kidney disease treatment in Kenya.

According to a statement shared on X on Thursday, February 5, 2026, the CS said the meeting focused on bringing specialised renal care closer to communities and improving service delivery in public hospitals.

“Held a consultative meeting with U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Ms Susan Burns and a delegation from the Africa Healthcare Network (AHN), led by CEO Matt Williams, to explore partnerships aimed at expanding access to chronic kidney disease treatment in Kenya,” Aden Duale wrote

During the engagement, AHN shared insights on the current state of kidney care in Kenya, highlighting both progress and the ongoing challenges facing patients.

“Discussions focused on strengthening hospital service delivery to bring specialised renal care closer to communities, in line with Universal Health Coverage (UHC) goals,” Duale wrote.

CS Duale also briefed the delegation on the Government’s National Equipment Services Programme (NESP), which aims to improve diagnostic capacity and enhance specialised healthcare services in public hospitals.

“AHN shared insights on the current state of renal care in Kenya, noting both progress made and persistent challenges,” Aden Duale’s statement reads.

He emphasised that strategic partnerships are critical for accelerating Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage agenda.

“I briefed the delegation on the Government’s National Equipment Services Programme (NESP), which seeks to enhance diagnostic capacity and improve the availability and quality of specialised services in public hospitals,” Duale wrote.

Strengthening specialised care for chronic illnesses remains a priority for the Ministry of Health as it works to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare for all Kenyans.

“Strengthening specialised care through strategic partnerships remains critical to accelerating UHC and advancing the 5th Administration’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), as we work to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare for all,” Duale’s statement reads.
