A Milimani Anti-Corruption Court has released Kangema principal probation officer Julius Irungu Njogu, charged with receiving a bribe of Ksh150,000 on a bond of Ksh800,000 with an alternative of Ksh400,000 cash bail.

Irungu has been charged with requesting a Ksh170,000 bribe from Peter Njhia Njuguna on behalf of Kangema Law Courts Senior Principal Magistrate Martin Kinyua Mutegi on July 16, 2026.

The principal probation officer has also been charged with receiving Ksh150,000 while at Kangema Township from Peter, who had been convicted in a 2024 criminal case before the Kangema Chief Magistrate’s Court.

Appearing before Milimani Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate Harrison Barasa on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, he denied all the charges, and a plea of not guilty was entered by the court.

Irungu urged the court to release him on reasonable bail, arguing that he is a family man and a father of three children, adding that he is a senior public servant who is left with four years to retire.

“Your Honour, I am a family man and a father to three. I urge this court to grant me a reasonable cash bail pending the hearing and determination of this case,” Irungu submitted to court.

Further, the accused requested the court to direct the prosecution to release his phone back to him if it will not be used as evidence or he be allowed to change his two SIM cards.

 Witness statements

The accused also asked the court to direct the prosecution to supply him with witness statements.

The Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) did not object to his release on bail and bond.

The court has granted the accused a bond of Ksh800,000 with a surety of the same amount with an alternative of paying a cash bail of Ksh400,000.

“The accused has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and he has applied for a reasonable bond term; the prosecution does not oppose,” Magistrate Barasa stated.

“Accordingly, I find the first accused person is entitled to be admitted to bail on reasonable terms. The first accused person shall be released upon executing a bond of Ksh800,000 with one surety of similar amount in the alternative he may be released upon depositing a cash bail of Ksh400,000,” the court ruled.

According to the charge sheet, Njogu requested the convict Peter Njihia for the money for the magistrate to issue a favourable sentence against him in a criminal case.

“On July 16, 2026, at Kangema Law Court, Irungu being the principal probation officer – Kangema you requested for a financial advantage Ksh170,000 from Peter Njihia Njuguna on behalf of Hon.Martin Kinyua Mutegi would pass a favourable sentence in Kangema Chief Magistrate Court criminal case number E645 of 2024 in which Peter Njihia had been charged and convicted,” part of the charge sheet reads.

On the second count, Irungu has been accused of receiving Ksh150,000 from Peter Njihia on July 21, 2026, while at Kangema Township within Murang’a County on behalf of Magistrate Kinyua to influence a favourable sentencing.
