Kaluma calls for Sifuna’s exit as ODM SG and Senate Minority Leader
By Mustafa Juma, July 26, 2025Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma has called for the immediate resignation of Edwin Sifuna from his roles as Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and Senate Minority Leader, saying his continued stay is no longer tenable.
In a strongly worded statement shared via his official X account on Saturday, July 26, 2025, Kaluma claimed that Sifuna’s leadership had become divisive and counterproductive, especially in light of recent disagreements within the ODM party over the ongoing political realignments and the broad-based governance arrangement involving ODM and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
“Sifuna’s continued stay as ODM Secretary General and as a leader of the Minority Party in the Senate is no longer tenable. The faster he leaves, the better for him!” Kaluma stated.

The MP’s remarks come amid rising tensions within ODM, with factions emerging over the party’s direction and its relationship with President William Ruto’s administration.
Sifuna, a vocal critic of the broad-based government proposal, has found himself increasingly at odds with some party members who support the initiative.
Raila on Sifuna
Kaluma’s remarks come hours after ODM party leader Raila Odinga broke his silence on the rising internal tensions within the political outfit, defending Sifuna’s right to speak while making it clear that his recent remarks do not represent the party’s official position.

Speaking on Saturday, July 26, 2025, during a memorial gathering for Mama Jane Adongo Wando, in Bar Athenge village, Sigomere, Raila clarified that while Sifuna is a respected figure within ODM, the party’s position on critical matters will only be decided through internal discussions by official party organs.
“What Sifuna said is based on personal opinion,” Raila said. “But ODM’s opinion will come as a result of discussion within the organs of the party. This is what we make public.”
Sifuna’s remarks
Raila’s remarks follow Sifuna’s explosive interview on a local TV channel, where the Nairobi Senator declared the ODM-UDA MoU “dead,” citing unfulfilled promises by the government and increased extrajudicial killings, including the controversial death of blogger Albert Ojwang.
The comments triggered sharp reactions within the party. Some leaders, particularly those serving in President Ruto’s government under the ODM-UDA agreement, accused Sifuna of overstepping and called for his resignation.
