June 26, 2025: Top news events to look out for today

Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.

Protest postmortem

Discussions surrounding the bloody Gen Z-led protests held across the country yesterday are expected to dominate conversations today across various platforms.

The June 25, 2025, demonstrations were staged to mark the first anniversary of the historic protests that took place on the same date last year.

The 2024 protests, led by Gen Z, resulted in unprecedented fatalities, the storming of Parliament, and a section of the building being set on fire.

Similarly, Wednesday’s demonstrations were marred by violence, with at least nine people reported dead and significant destruction of property.

The police, along with oversight bodies such as the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), are expected to issue official statements regarding the deaths and damage witnessed during the nationwide protests.

TV blackout

On Wednesday, June 25, 2025, the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) ordered the shutdown of NTV, KTN, and K24 TV for broadcasting live coverage of the protests.

However, later the same day, the High Court issued a ruling suspending the CA’s directive and ordered the immediate restoration of all affected broadcast signals.

As of today, Thursday, June 26, 2025, NTV, KTN, and K24 TV are expected to be back on air, broadcasting as usual in compliance with the court’s directive.

Today, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is prosecuting several criminal cases against police officers accused of murder and violence.

One of the most high-profile cases set to be heard involves Absolom Ondiek and two others, who are facing charges of attempted murder and conspiracy to defeat justice in the case of Brian Onyango.

Fisherman Brian Odhiambo went missing after being picked up by state agents. He was last seen on January 18, 2025, when he it was said that he was apprehended by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers near the fence of Lake Nakuru National Park.

It is suspected that Odhiambo was killed and buried within the park. As of today, he remains missing.

NLC case

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is today set to prosecute a case against former National Land Commission (NLC) Chairperson Mohammad Swazuri and 23 others.

The case involves charges of fraudulent acquisition of public property and abuse of office levelled against officials of the National Land Commission and their associates.
