Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.

Ruto set to sign into law IEBC Bill

President William Ruto is set to sign into law the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Bill.

Ruto is set to assent to the Bill on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at 9:00 am at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

This is the first bill successfully processed by Parliament based on the recommendations of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report.

“President William Ruto invites leaders of parliamentary parties, both inside and outside Parliament, to join him for this historic event,” State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed stated.

Once enacted, the president would be required to appoint a selection panel promptly, creating a panel of nine to enlist the new commissioners, increasing two from the current law.

The proposed law states that the current team would cease to exist when the Bill is enacted, although the members could be re-nominated.

Corruption cases

A number of corruption cases are scheduled for either hearing or mention on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.

The first case, set for hearing at the Milimani Courts involves former Migori Governor Okoth Obado and several other accused.

They are charged with conspiracy to commit an economic crime, and conflict of interest. Allegations relate to misappropriation of public funds in Migori County Government during financial years 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016 and 2016/2017.

Another case set for hearing involves Nathaniel Ahaza and several others.

The suit entails a bid for recovery of Ksh14 million allegedly embezzled by the defendants from the County Government of Vihiga.

Power outages

At least six counties are scheduled to experience power outages on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.

The counties include Nairobi, Kericho, Busia, Nyeri, Kiambu and Mombasa.

In Nairobi, areas that will be affected include Kitsuru Road, Spring Valley Road, Bendera Lane, Thigiri, Gardens, Thigiri Lane, Thigiri Close, Thigiri Ridge Road and adjacent customers. Other parts of Nairobi that will be affected include Ngong View Estate, The Hub, Tree Lane, Part of Windy Ridge, DOD, Westwood, Kerarapon Road, Part of Ngong Road and adjacent customers.

In Kericho, areas that will be affected include Ngoina Road, Kabartegan, Chelilis, Chemoiywo, Kusumek and adjacent customers.

In Busia, areas that will experience power outage include Amerikwai, Limara, Emuria FM, Angorom, Alupe Hasp & University, KEMRI, Kalro, Adungosi, Amongura, Adungosi Police, Chakol Girls, Asing’ee, Lukolis, Machakusi, Railway Malaba, Royco, KRA, Customs, Malaba Town, Amagoro, Akichelesit, Kengatunyi, Akudiet, Kocholia, Kakepel, Angurai Market, Kakurikit, Osia Dispensary, Katakwa, Rwatama, Kolanya Girls and Boys, Akudiet, Tamlega, Nambuya and adjacent customers.

In Nyeri, the parts that will experience a blackout include Gura, Kaiguri Schools and market, Gondo School, Gatugi C/Fact, Mbari ya Ngai Village, Giathenge Market, Kagongo Village, Gura Thuthi Research, Karima Boys School and Mission, Gwa Karuri, Gura Wart, Gathaithi Market and grad, Muthinga Booster, Ft. Nyamu Secondary School, Kiaigi Primary and adjacent customers.

Areas in Kiambu that will be affected include St Mulumba Hospital, Chania Feeds, Capwell Industry, Kwa Jungle, Parts of Makongeni, Delta Petrol Station, Gretsa University Kenya, Kenblest and adjacent customers.

In Mombasa, the outage will affect Leisure, Maryjoy, Basketball, Benki Estate, Kisauni Polytechnic, VOK, Maweni Primary School, Ziwa la Ng’ombe, Sheikh Zayed, Bombolulu Heights, Total Bombolulu, Naivas Bombolulu, Bombolulu Workshop, Jasmine Water, Frere Town, Mgongeni, Mbungoni, Old Mugoya and adjacent customers.
