Judiciary announces 45 vacancies for judge positions

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has invited applications from qualified legal practitioners to fill 45 positions in the various courts in the country.
In a gazette notice dated June 4, 2025, the JSC announced 15 vacancies for judges in the court of appeal, 20 posts for judges of the high court and 10 vacancies for the environmental and land court judges.
In the gazette notice, the JSC indicated that the minimum court of appeal judges were eligible for a monthly salary of between Ksh775,000 and Ksh1.1 million as a gross remuneration, excluding benefits.
“Based on guidelines by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission of Kenya, gross monthly remuneration package excluding benefits is a minimum of KSh775,845 and a Maximum of KSh1,187,152,” the gazette notice clarified.
Minimum requirements
The equally indicated that the applicants for the positions of court of appeal judges must possess at least 10 years of experience as a superior court judge, a 10-year experience as a distinguished legal practitioner, academic or in a relevant legal field and must have a high moral character, be a person of integrity and impartiality.
The applications are set to be received by July 1, 2025, and should be sent to the Judicial Service Commission offices in Nairobi’s Harambee Avenue.

The JSC is responsible for the recruitment of judges, their removal and those of the other judicial staff. Equally, the JSC handles complaints against judicial staff.
For the High Court judges, the JSC equally indicated that their salaries will range between Ksh750,000 to Ksh1,029,000.
Integrity
The applicants for these 20 positions for high court judges must possess at least 10 years of experience in a superior court, 10 years of experience as a legal academic or as a distinguished legal practitioner in a relevant legal field.
Also, they must be persons of integrity, high morals and impartial.
High court judges are in charge of original jurisdiction in criminal and civil matters, jurisdiction to hear an appeal from a decision of a tribunal appointed to consider the removal of a person from office and hear all matters related to the constitutional powers of all state organs as well as the constitutional relationship between the two levels of government.
The gazette notice equally called for applications for the position of 10 environment and land court judges, whose remuneration packages will be the same as that of the High Court judges.
Their main roles will be to hear and determine all disputes relating to the environment and the use, occupation of and title of land.
They will also hear and determine matters relating to environmental planning and protection, climate issues, planning rates and rent disputes.
