Jirongo’s body to be transported from Nairobi to Kitale ahead of burial in Lumakanda
By Mabonga Makhanu, December 14, 2025The former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, funeral steering, has stated that the body of the late will be transported from Lee Funeral Home to Kitale ahead of his burial at his Lumakanda home in Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County.
This came after a funeral steering committee member, during a visit by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale to the family on Sunday, December 14, 2025, briefed the senator on the burial programme.
He said that he had received a phone call earlier in the day informing him that once the body is released from Lee Funeral Home, it will be taken to Kitale, one of Jirongo’s homes, before proceeding to Lumakanda, where all burial rites will be conducted ahead of interment.

“Today I received a phone call from Nairobi; I was informed that after the body leaves Nairobi, it will be taken to Kitale, then here to Lumakanda for burial,” a funeral steering committee member said.
This arrangement is in tandem with most Luhya traditions, especially when the deceased is a polygamous man. Traditionally, upon release from the mortuary after preservation while funeral arrangements take place, the body is taken to the home of the younger wife before finally being taken to the elder wife’s homestead, where burial usually occurs.
Jirongo appears to have followed suit.
Situation at Jirongo’s home
Jirongo’s home in Lumakanda looks deserted, with little activity taking place. Only a handful of neighbours and friends have flocked to the home to mourn the late leader and stand in solidarity with the relatives present.
The chairman of the funeral steering committee, who identified himself as Jirongo’s friend and political ally, stated that his immediate family is in the city together with his wife, with the home left under the watch of relatives, elders, and friends.
He said this during Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa’s condolence visit to the family, pleading with him, as the county boss, to help facilitate burial arrangements. He noted that in most Luhya funerals, mourners are not supposed to leave bereaved homes without at least a glass of water or something to wipe their tears.
Barasa’s donation
In response to the plea, Barasa went on to heed the elders’ request, stating that it was true. He added that not only during funerals, but also in the home of a leader of the calibre of Jirongo, people often visit, knowing that something will be available for them.

He went ahead and donated Ksh100,000 as part of his condolence to help cater for funeral expenses before official burial plans take shape.
Jirongo lost his life in a grisly road accident in Naivasha while rushing back to the city at 3:00 a.m.
He died on the spot, and his body was taken to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital before later being transferred to Lee Funeral Home for preservation.
