A prison warder at Gathigiriri GK Prison in Mwea, Kirinyaga county committed suicide after shooting dead a police officer in a suspected love triangle on Sunday night.
Police reports indicate that the warder, Kering Kipkosgei, had visited his colleague, a Senior Sergeant, and was having dinner with her and her children.
Around that time, Corporal Boniface Ngaragari, the woman’s estranged husband, also came visiting and demanded to know what Kipkosgei was doing in the house and a scuffle ensued.
Ngaragari started fighting the ‘intruder’ while the woman stepped in and separated the two.
“But Kipkosgei who had retreated to the kitchen, picked a pistol and fatally shot Ngaragari in the neck,” police reports said.
Realising he had fatally shot his rival, he shot himself in the head. The two were rushed to Karira Mission Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival. Corporal Ngaragari was attached to Kirinyaga East sub-county as a driver.
Both drivers
The car assigned to the prison warder was found parked at the scene of the incident.
Coincidentally, both Ngaragari and Kipkosgei were drivers within their respective duty stations.
Deputy Officer in-charge of the prison Isaac Bwire Naderia reported the incident at the nearby Wanguru police station where the matter is now being handled. The bodies are lying at Karira Hospital Mortuary awaiting post-mortem.
Elsewhere, Mourine Anyango, the police officer who was shot by a colleague outside Kamukunji Police Station on Sunday died just days before she could report to Webuye police station where she had been transferred, People Daily has established.
Her killer, Lawrence Ewoi, attached to the Quick Response Unit in Starehe shot her and injured another officer, George Gitonga, who is fighting for his life at Kenyatta National Hospital.
It remains unclear why Ms Anyango had not yet reported to her new working station, with sources confiding in People Daily that she was reluctant to proceed to Webuye and was trying to reverse the transfer.
A detective privy to the investigation said they are yet to establish motive behind the fatal shooting, as the deceased and her killer were close friends.
“They were known friends. It remains unclear what led to the shooting that ended the life of Ms Anyango, a very young officer,” the detective said.
Today, detectives following up the matter are expected to have Gitau record a statement.
An officer yesterday said at the time of the shoot-out, Gitau tried to intervene but was shot in the process.
“He is a man of interest and might have overheard why the two disagreed. He will be key in finding out what really transpired,” said the officer who sought anonymity.
After the shooting, Ewoi shot boarded a motorbike and fled towards Shauri Moyo police station.
As this was happening, officers raised alarm and efforts to track him were launched. He was soon tracked down to Industrial Area using a signal from his phone.
One of the officers who was deployed to track him down tried to cajole him to surrender and hand over the G3 rifle he used in ending Ms Anyango’s life in vain. He killed himself with the same firearm.
