The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has highlighted 15 tasks accomplished so far in the ongoing probe into the death of slain blogger Albert Ojwang.

In a statement on Friday, June 13, 2025, the oversight body detailed the various steps they took in piecing together the mysterious death on Sunday, June 8, 2025.

The authority says that upon being notified of the death, they visited and documented the scene of the crime, aiming to preserve the integrity of the evidence and establish the sequence of events, as well as identify any indicators of criminal misconduct.

Collection of samples

Secondly, the authority collected blood samples from the scene and undertook analysis of the blood samples that were on the wall vis-à-vis the blood on the floor of the cell.

The body also gathered all relevant documents from the Central Police Station.

In combing through the area around the station, IPOA says they proceeded to seize the CCTV DVR data for forensic analysis.

Afterwards, the policing oversight body collected statements from all five DCI officers who were responsible for the arrest of Ojwang in Homa Bay County.

As part of the probe, they proceeded to Mbagathi Hospital and obtained a medical report from the facility where Ojwang was supposedly rushed for medical attention on the nights between Saturday and Sunday, when he was reportedly found unconscious during a routine cell inspection at the station.

The body then focused on potential witnesses in the case, identifying and recording statements from the persons of interest.

Additionally, they got extracts from the Occurrence Book (OB) from Mawego Police Station, where Ojwang was first booked prior to being transported to Nairobi.

Upon the post-mortem of Ojwang’s body undertaken on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, they obtained a copy of the autopsy report detailing the conclusive cause of Ojwang’s death.

Meanwhile, as the samples drawn from the deceased’s body were secured and forwarded to the government chemist, the investigation team recorded statements from one more detainee held at the central police station and the relevant officers based at the station.

The team further embarked on collecting samples from the crime scene and the deceased’s body before submitting them for analysis to the Government Chemist.

IPOA has also confirmed that it has recorded statements for family members, with its latest development being the arrest of two police officers, including Officer Commanding Station (OCS), Mr. Samson Talam, and a civilian.
