Contributions to Kenya’s democracy

Hassan highlighted Odinga’s significant contributions, noting his leadership during Kenya’s push for multiparty democracy and his role in enacting the 2010 Constitution.

He described Odinga as a principled and studious Pan-African leader whose political career spanned over four decades, defined by resilience and commitment to justice and equality.

The Rt. Honourable Odinga’s legacy is indelibly woven into Kenya’s democratic journey. His leadership in the struggle for multiparty democracy, his instrumental role in making the Constitution of Kenya 2010 a reality, and his efforts to promote national unity at defining moments in Kenya’s history preserved national cohesion,” Hassan said.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) also paid tribute, describing Odinga as a leader dedicated to advancing democracy, justice, and national unity.

The commission emphasized his contributions to constitutional reforms, multiparty democracy, and social inclusion, noting that his work transformed Kenya’s political landscape and inspired generations.

Beyond Kenya, Odinga’s work as the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development in 2018 underscored his commitment to a connected and prosperous continent. NCIC highlighted his tenure as Prime Minister, during which he played a central role in promoting peace and stability.

IPOA extended condolences to Odinga’s widow, Ida, family members, friends, and all Kenyans, with Hassan stating, “On behalf of the entire IPOA family, I extend my deepest condolences as we mourn the loss of one of our nation’s most iconic leaders.” NCIC echoed the sentiment, conveying condolences to the family and the public.

Both statements concluded with prayers for his eternal rest. IPOA noted, “May the soul of the Rt. Honourable Raila Amollo Odinga rest in eternal peace,” while NCIC added, “Rest in Peace, Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga. Your vision for a united Kenya lives on.”
