Kisumu Catholic Archbishop Maurice Makumba Muhatia yesterday assured his flock that he is on a steady path to recovery after being involved in a road accident on Monday.

Muhatia is being treated at Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu after his vehicle was hit by a speeding truck at a roadblock on the Kakamega-Kisumu highway in Vihiga county.

His vehicle was among six that were rammed by the truck as they lined up up at the roadblock awaiting inspection by traffic police officers.

No death was reported but the victims were taken to various hospitals in different conditions.

Roadblock tragedy

Archbishop Muhatia (above) was rushed to St Mary’s Mukumu Mission Hospital in Kakamega County where he received emergency treatment before being transferred to Aga Khan Hospital. “It was a close shave and I am grateful to God. I am feeling well and will be back to my sacred duties soon,” he told ‘People Daily’ on phone.

His family said he was headed to his home in Murhanda, Shinyalu Constituency, Kakamega County.

The brother of another cleric also escaped death in the tragedy, but his vehicle was destroyed beyond repair.

“My brother, Raphael, was also involved in the accident. He is safe but his car has been written off,” said Father Edward Mulama of Holy Rosary Shiseso Catholic Parish in Ikolomani.
