National Police Service boss Hillary Mutyambai has moved in to curb the rising cases of crime in Nairobi.

In a Monday, June 7 forum with netizens, Mutyambai encouraged members of the public to report to police any unusual activity they might spot.

“We have police officers on patrol 24/7. We also have an elaborate multi-agency team comprised of a special crime prevention unit that deals with homicides. We also encourage members of the public to report to the police should they spot any unusual activity,” Mutyambai said.

The police boss also stated that NPS was in communication with key players in the boda boda industry to arrest criminal cases involving boda bodas.

“We have a special anti-mugging squad that handles robbery with violence incidents including the ones that involve Boda boda riders. We have been engaging the operators through a sensitization program dubbed Usalama barararani on abiding by the rule of law,” the DP said.

Mutyambai’s declaration comes barely days after a grade 2 pupil was kidnapped around her home in Kitengela and later murdered by suspects who are in police custody.

Shantel Nzembi went missing on May 29 and her body was found stashed in a gunny bag. 

A postmortem conducted on the body of the girl revealed she died from suffocation by blockage of the mouth and nose. 

“We have a Child Protection Unit under the DCI that deals with children matters. We have also deployed officers in various parts to heighten security but another strategy is to engage the leaders under community policing,” the IG said while responding to a worried citizen who wanted to know the strategy put in place to stop the defiling and disappearance of minors.

This is not the first time the police boss informed members of the public of a special police unit formed to handle special crimes.

In April, Mutyambai said a similar unit was formed to investigate the disappearance and killings of four men who were last seen having lunch together at a restaurant in Kitengela.

“This morning, I directed the DCI homicide team to investigate this matter in order to get to the bottom of it. The team has already begun its work and will be expected to report to the IG on the entire matter within a month,” the IG said on April 30.

The four friends, Elijah Obuong, Jack Anyango, Benjamin Imbai and Brian Oduor went missing on April 19 after a lunch meeting in Kitengela.

Their car, a white Toyota Mark X, was found abandoned at a parking lot about 500 metres from the club the following day.
