The National Police Service (NPS) has ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into an incident of serious misconduct involving police officers at Nandi Hills Police Station in Nandi County.

In a press statement released on Friday, January 16, 2026, signed by Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, the Service said it had become aware of disturbing CCTV footage circulating on social media showing the abuse against the youth playing a game of pool, which occurred on January 10, 2026.

The police leadership has described the incident as “barbaric” and a gross violation of the National Police Service Act, the Code of Conduct for Police Officers, and fundamental human rights principles.

“The NPS is appalled by what has been depicted and unequivocally condemns such behaviour, which has no place in a civilised society. The actions portrayed constitute a clear violation of the National Police Service Act, the Code of Conduct for Police Officers, and the fundamental principles of human rights and dignity that the Service is sworn to uphold,” the statement read in part.

Kanja calls for investigations

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has personally reviewed the footage and directed the Internal Affairs Unit to conclude investigations within three days. The probe will be conducted in collaboration with independent institutions to ensure transparency and accountability.

The Service said any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary and legal action. ”Upon conclusion of investigation, any officer found culpable will be dealt with accordingly,” the statement added.

While condemning the incident, the NPS emphasised that the actions of the officers involved do not represent the values of the entire Service, noting that the majority of officers serve the public with integrity and professionalism.

“The Service wishes to reassure the public that this isolated incident does not reflect our standards, training, and values,” the statement added.
The police have also urged members of the public with information related to the incident to come forward and assist investigators.

Meanwhile, the NPS call for investigations into the matter comes shortly after Nandi Governor Stephen Sang condemned the incident. In a statement issued on Friday, January 16, 2026, the governor said the video, which has been circulating online, depicts police officers attacking civilians who were peacefully gathered and playing a game of pool.

He described the incident as both worrying and unacceptable, noting that it represents a serious violation of the constitutional rights and dignity of citizens.

IPOA has also deployed a team to gather evidence on what transpired.
