The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that 1,876,274 new voters have been registered since the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise began on March 30, 2026.

In its latest update released on Friday, April 24, 2026, the commission said the figure reflects an increase of 505,344 new registrations in six days, rising from 1,370,930 reported on April 17, 2026.

The registration exercise is scheduled to close on April 28, 2026, with only four days remaining.

“New registered voters: The number of newly registered voters since the commencement of ECVR on 30th March, 2026, to 23rd April, 2026, is 1,876,274,” read the IEBC statement in part.

IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon urged eligible citizens who have not registered to take advantage of the remaining window.

“By doing so, citizens play a direct role in shaping Kenya’s future and strengthening our democratic governance,” Ethekon said.

Counties breakdown

Nairobi County has maintained a commanding lead in the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration with 209,965 new enrolments, followed by Kiambu at 97,557, Kakamega (80,711), Nakuru (81,166), and Machakos (65,616).

Other strong performers include Meru (56,486), Kilifi (54,171), Kisii (50,551), and Turkana (50,310). On the lower end, Lamu recorded the least registrations at 8,345, followed by Isiolo (9,291), Mandera (14,946), Samburu (17,361), and Nyamira (17,575).

Registration updates and voter movements

The commission also reported 159,410 voter transfers and 2,817 changes or updates of personal details during the same period.

It said detailed county-by-county figures have been included in an annex to the update, with Nairobi County expected to record high numbers based on earlier trends.

IEBC noted that the exercise is part of preparations for the August 10, 2027 General Election, where voters will elect leaders across six elective positions.

The commission stated that the credibility of the electoral process depends on an accurate and updated Register of Voters, in line with constitutional requirements under Article 38, which guarantees citizens the right to participate in elections through registration.

Voter registration process and verification

IEBC outlined the multi-stage process used in compiling the Register of Voters. The process includes identity verification using legally recognised documents, biometric capture such as fingerprints, facial images and iris data, automated de-duplication, a 30-day public verification period, and an independent audit before certification and publication in the Kenya Gazette.

Existing voters have been encouraged to verify their details through the IEBC online portal at https://verify.iebc.or.ke.

After the closure of the ECVR exercise on April 28, 2026, voter registration will continue under the regular Continuous Voter Registration programme at 57 Huduma Centres, all 290 constituencies, and the Customer Experience Centre at Anniversary Towers.

The commission also noted that registration remains suspended in areas affected by by-elections or election petitions, including Porro Ward, Endo Ward, Emurua Dikirr, Ol Kalou, Malava, and Mbeere North constituencies.

IEBC called on stakeholders to uphold the independence of the electoral process and avoid misinformation or interference that could affect public confidence in the voter register.
