The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), led by Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon, held a consultative meeting with the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Charles Kanjama on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, to enhance collaboration ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

The discussions focused on voter education, strategic communication, institutional coordination, and continuous electoral preparedness.

Both institutions emphasised the importance of structured engagement to improve planning and strengthen public trust in the electoral process. The meeting also reviewed past electoral experiences and explored ways to enhance future coordination between stakeholders involved in elections.

LSK commitments and electoral reform

During the engagement, Kanjama reaffirmed LSK’s commitment to supporting free, fair, transparent, and credible elections. He noted that elections involve a broad ecosystem that includes security agencies, political parties, constitutional commissions, and legal professionals.

He commended the IEBC for its continued collaboration with the LSK in conducting professional elections with minimal disputes. Kanjama also announced plans to establish a dedicated LSK elections committee to support continuous engagement with the IEBC, contribute to legal reform discussions, and enhance electoral preparedness ahead of 2027.

“Kanjama commended the IEBC for continued collaboration in the conduct of LSK elections over the years and noted that the Society has experienced minimal electoral disputes during this period. He further acknowledged the contribution of legal professionals serving within the Commission and other institutions in strengthening democratic governance,” read the IEBC X post.

He emphasised the need for sustained collaboration among all electoral stakeholders.

IEBC framework for cooperation

IEBC Chairperson Ethekon welcomed the commitment from the LSK, stating that effective elections depend on strong partnerships among institutions. He called for sustained collaboration through joint technical teams and structured reviews of past electoral processes to draw lessons for future improvements.

Ethekon stated that such cooperation would enhance public confidence and strengthen democratic governance. The IEBC and LSK agreed that continuous engagement would be essential in addressing emerging electoral challenges and ensuring preparedness for the upcoming general election cycle.

2027 outlook

The engagement comes against the backdrop of ongoing calls for strengthened electoral accountability ahead of the 2027 polls. Earlier in 2026, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua urged the LSK to maintain scrutiny of the IEBC, emphasising the importance of transparency and verifiable electoral processes.

The LSK has previously played a role in election-related litigation, constitutional interpretation, and advisory opinions on electoral conduct. Analysts note that while increased collaboration between the IEBC and LSK may enhance transparency and preparedness, maintaining institutional independence remains central to safeguarding credible elections in Kenya.
