About 12 families from Ndiara village in Kahatia in upper Kiharu have been rendered homeless after their houses sunk due to the heavy rains which have been pounding the area.

The families spent their Sunday night in the cold after their houses started showing signs of sinking and they vacated for their safety.

About 58 people who live in the area have moved out fearing for more destruction.

The affected families now want the government to get land where they can be settled permanently as they don’t want to get back there.

Milka Wanjiku, one  of the affected residents said her house was completely destroyed and she has nowhere else to go.

“We would like the government to show us where to go because this place is no longer habitable,” she said.

Janet Nyambura, another victim, said for years the government has been giving empty promises of moving them to safer grounds but it has never actualised it.

Nyambura said the area is prone to landslides with such incidences occurring every rainy season and this poses a threat to their lives.

“We have been promised more than enough times that we shall be moved to another parcel of land but this has never happened,” she said.

This is one of the areas  which developed cracks during April last year’s rains and they heavy rains pounding the area have aggravated the situation.

Kiharu Mp Ndindi Nyoro has urged the government to honor its promise of relocating these people saying every time the rains hit, they become a troubled lot.
