Gusii FC firmly in race for promotion, says maverick coach
A four-match winning run in the Betika National Super League has left Gusii Football Club dreaming of challenging for promotion to the Betking Football Kenya Federation Premier League next season.
Speaking exclusively to People Sport, Gusii’s highly-regarded coach Kassim Junior Otieno said he enjoys a good relationship with both players and management and hopes to use the rapport to fulfill the team’s premier league dream.
Kassim joined Gusii FC this season when the team was placed second from bottom in the league and quickly turned around their fortunes.
The team lies 11th on the log and the former Nyakach United and Timsales FC tactician believes promotion is an achievable target.
“The gap between us and the third and fourth placed teams, Kisumu All-Stars and Shabana FC, is just four points. We’re on 30 points and they are both tied up on 34 points.
So, if we win two games and teams above us slip up, we’ll be there. So we’re firmly in the race for promotion,” said Otieno.
Otieno added he has a team capable of winning against any team in the NSL and will make good use of the experience as he attempts to guide them to their first top-flight league.
“I have Anthony Ndolo in the team. A very experienced player and a former Kenyan Premier League Most Valuable Player.
I also have Mike Simiyu, Peter Ogechi, Murage, Wycliffe Nyangechi, formerly of Western Stima and Muhoroni Youth and many more great players.
So if you look at the team I have, it has all the ingredients and impetus of playing in the top tier.
Our target is to finish in the top three, and my players have promised to play their hearts out in our push for promotion,” added coach Kassim.
Next match for Gusii FC is an away match against Fortune Sacco today at Kianyaga Stadium as Shabana welcome Silibwet FC at Migori Stadium.
