Gun used in US embassy staff murder broken, ‘tampered’ with
A police officer who is the main suspect in the death of a United States embassy staffer last weekend tried to interfere with a pistol which is alleged to have been used in the murder, a Kiambu court heard yesterday.
The suspect Dennis Mwai Irungu, was arrested on Monday after being summoned by Kiambu Police County Commander Michael Muchiri and ordered to surrender his assigned Jericho Pistol NO.KEEKP333522 with 15 rounds of ammunition.
An affidavit signed by CPL Reuben Mwaniki from the DCI Headquarters, stated that the pistol was later to have its trigger guard broken while the serial number had also been tampered with.
Further, the court heard the firearm had some other missing parts which would be crucial to its case and therefore investigators required more time to piece together evidence before the hearing of the case.
Investigators believe that the said firearm was the weapon used to cut short the life of Njomo, and requested for more time.
Kiambu Principal Magistrate Wanjiru Ng’ang’a ruled that the suspect be detained for 14 days at the Kiambu Police Station pending investigations over the murder that took place outside a Kiambu club.
Mwaniki had sought orders to detain Irungu who is a prime suspect in the murder of Anthony Njomo Kiono, now deceased, noting he needed time to gather more evidence and witnesses to be included in the case.
In his submission the investigator highlighted how the deceased who was enjoying his drinks at Quikin Bar and lounge located in Kiambu town was shot dead outside the premises minutes to 3am. The scene of crime was documented and one spent cartridge was recovered and kept as an exhibit.
It was established that Irungu’s work station is KICC Police Station which is under the Central Police division, Nairobi region. He was captured by CCTV cameras at the club picking up a fight with revelers outside the lounge which is not under his jurisdiction.
The DCI are also pursuing three other suspects believed to have been involved in the scuffle hence requesting the suspect not to be released as he might interfere with the investigations.
The police officer together with another suspect Nason Kiteme Kangalia who was arraigned in court on Monday and the investigating officer given 10 days to detain them are said to have been hired by a land buying company which had a function at the said pub.
On the Material day the company had sponsored a Music extravaganza by Popular Kikuyu Musician John Njagi where the officer who also serves as the company’s head of security was entangled in an altercation with some revelers occasioning the fight.
In a sworn affidavit it has been indicated that differences arose and a fight ensued when two parties disagreed over a woman with one side accusing the other of seducing their women.
The deceased who was not part of any of the warring groups met his death when the fight spiraled outside where CCTV Footage captured him on phone call opposite the club when the stray bullet hit him.
His family who reside in Ngegu village in the outskirts of Kiambu town have demanded justice for the victim saying they lost a dear soul.
