Gov’t withdraws former First Lady Mama Ngina’s security
Former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta is the latest VIP to lose her security ahead of anti-government protests on Wednesday, July 19, 2023.
Mama Ngina’s security was withdrawn on Tuesday evening, a day after politicians allied to the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition confirmed that their security detail had also been recalled.
Reports indicate that officers from the General Service Unit and Administration Police were ordered to leave the former First Lady’s Gatundu and Muthaiga homes at around 5pm and told to report to nearest police stations.
The widow of Kenya’s First President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and mother of immediate former President Uhuru Kenyatta was reportedly not informed of the decision to recall her security.
Mama Ngina had about eight officers guarding her homes after the government downscaled her security from about 30 officers in February this year.
Uhuru and members of his Cabinet including ex-Interior minister Fred Matiang’i were among those affected by the changes effected months after President William Ruto assumed office.
Yesterday, the government also withdrew security attached to Azimio leader Raila Odinga and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka ahead of the opposition’s anti-government protests.
Several governors and dozens of members of parliament were also affected.
The move comes in the wake of the latest warning by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kindiki Kithure that the government will not allow the leaders to hold protests while enjoying State security.
The opposition has announced a series of rallies on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to protest against the high cost of living.
President Ruto recently alleged that the Kenyatta family was funding anti-government protests in the country. He is, however, yet to substantiate the claims.
The Head of State alleged that the funds were being used to revive outlawed Mungiki sect.
“I also want to ask my friend Uhuru to get away from that Mzee (Raila). Stop giving him money to hire Mungiki to destroy Nairobi. You were a president, be a gentleman. We helped you when you were the president. If you don’t dissociate from him, we shall also send you away, just like the riddle man,” Ruto said.
