Govt launches Ksh1.8B climate programme for 14 counties
By Kiprono Keileb, March 18, 2026The National Treasury has announced the rollout of a major climate resilience programme targeting farmers and communities across 14 counties in the Lake Region, aimed at strengthening food security and protecting livelihoods from the effects of climate change.
In a statement shared on X on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, the National Treasury confirmed the official transition of the programme from planning to full implementation.
“John Mbadi today chaired the inaugural Project Steering Committee meeting for the Tunza-GCF Programme, marking the shift from preparation to full implementation of a transformative climate resilient agriculture initiative across the Lake Region,” the statement reads.

The ministry further outlined the high-level meeting that brought together key national and international stakeholders to coordinate the programme and align efforts for its success.
“The meeting brought together Kisumu Governor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, FAO Representative Farayi Zimudzi, Patrick Kilemi, Festus Ng’eno, representatives from the Government of Denmark, LREB Governors’ representatives, and technical partners,” the statement reads.
Treasury CS John Mbadi said the program covers 14 counties and emphasised timely disbursement, strong coordination and zero delays to ensure impact at the community level.
“The CS said that the programme is a landmark national investment under Kenya’s partnership with the Green Climate Fund, covering 14 counties, and backed by USD 14 million in Government co-financing through FLLOCA. He emphasised the need for timely disbursement, strong coordination, and zero delays to ensure impact at the community level, while calling for greater alignment among partners to scale results and avoid fragmentation,” the statement reads.
He also pointed to progress already made, including structures put in place to manage the project, while urging a shift from planning discussions to tangible results that citizens can feel.
“Noting key progress, including the establishment of a Project Management Unit in Kisumu and approval of the Inception Report, the CS called for a decisive shift from planning to measurable outcomes, affirming that the Government will deliver on its commitments fully and without compromise,” the statement reads.
