Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wesley Rotich has come forward to clear his name from blame from angry residents, following the national government’s decision to move the October 20 Mashujaa Day celebrations. 

The event that had been originally scheduled to take place at Kamariny Stadium has now been moved to neighbouring Uasin Gishu County.

Governor Rotich indicated that President William Ruto reached the decision to move the celebrations to a central location in order to unite residents from different counties, considering the unique importance and national significance of the holiday.

This move has sparked mixed reactions among residents and leaders, with many arguing that the county has been neglected for a long time regarding major national development projects.

Speaking to youth at Lillies in Iten town on Monday, July 20, 2026, Governor Rotich said that although residents were delighted and had prepared to welcome various guests on that day, there is a need for residents to accept the changes that have been made, even if things did not go according to the initial plan.

“I ask the residents to accept the president’s decision. Mashujaa Day is just for one day, but there are many development projects that the president is implementing in our county that will last for years and years,” Rotich said.

Rotich assured residents that the construction of the historic Kamariny Stadium will be completed despite the relocation of the Mashujaa Day celebrations.

The leader urged residents to refrain from directing their anger at local leaders, explaining that they did everything in their power, but the President intended to use the event to bring together Kenyans from neighbouring counties.

Quoting President Ruto’s message to the residents, Governor Rotich stated:

“I promise you, I will personally finish your stadium, and I will come all the way to Iten myself.”

On their part, residents emphasised that the completion of the stadium will boost Elgeyo Marakwet’s status as the “Home of Champions”, while also promoting sports tourism and creating economic opportunities for the local community.
