George Khaniri demands explanation on how police obtained Jirongo’s phone password

By , December 16, 2025

Former Vihiga Senator George Khaniri has questioned how the police were able to unlock former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo’s phone after the tragic accident on Saturday, December 13, 2025.

While speaking to the media on Monday, December 15, 2025, amid many unanswered questions lingering in the family’s mind regarding how the late MP died, Khaniri asked how the police knew the password to Jirongo’s phone and why they called his wife to inform her of the tragic accident.

Another question Khaniri, who was with Jirongo on the last night of Friday, December 12, 2025, following a meeting between him and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula in Karen, wants answered is why the police did not call him or Wetang’ula, who were the immediate contacts on the call log, and instead called Jirongo’s wife, Anne.

According to Khaniri, Jirongo’s last conversations were him and Wetangula, but the police went ahead to call his wife, with whom Jirongo had not conversed for the rest of the day

“I even tried to ask his wife, Anne, how they accessed the password. I think she does not have answers to it as well. It is only police who can answer,” he said.

Khaniri also wants answers on how the late MP found himself in Naivasha. According to him, Jirongo had told him at 11:00 p.m. that he was leaving Karen to return home to Gigiri, but he was later found involved in a road accident in Naivasha.

Khaniri said this does not add up. He continued to state that, given the relationship he had with Jirongo over the years, Jirongo could not have driven himself to Naivasha, nor would he have done so willingly.

“We want to engage independent people who will give us an independent report,” he added.

Family demands

With gaps and grey areas surrounding Jirongo’s death, the family and friends want, besides the government investigation, to set up a private independent investigation unit to determine what killed the father of 38.

According to Khaniri, the injuries that Jirongo sustained, which are said to have caused his death, are inconsistent with the magnitude of the accident.

“The wreckage of his vehicle and the injuries the deceased got don’t add up,” he said.

“It doesn’t add up. If you look at the car and the victim, it doesn’t add up, and that is why we are insisting that there must be a thorough investigation,” he added.

These developments come ahead of the postmortem, which is set to be carried out on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at Lee Funeral Home.
