Gambia President Adama Barrow has lauded Kenya’s diplomatic sector, saying it has earned the country respect across the globe.

Barrow listed climate change, trade, peace and security as some of the key areas that have lifted Kenya above its peers.

He cited Kenya’s peacekeeping mission in Haiti, and the fight against terrorism as some of the diplomatic undertakings to foster peace and stability among countries.

“The stride you have made in addressing issues of climate change, trade, peace, security, and development have set an acknowledged precedent for emulation. On economic integration, the trade relations between Kenya and various African nations exemplify the spirit of Pan-Africanism we all cherish,” President Barrow said when he officiated the 64th Jamhuri Day celebrations with his host President William Ruto.

According to Barrow, Kenya remains an important powerhouse and a key player on the continent’s integration agenda during this period when Africa is stamping its authority on the global stage.

“Kenya has contributed significantly to the African unit. The beautiful cultural diversity and traditions of Kenya have enriched African society, while fostering understanding and respect among various ethnic groups on the continent. All this corresponds with the aspirations of the founding fathers of Pan-Africanism in Africa,” he said.

President Barrow called on African leaders to move with speed and unravel the paradox of under-development in the continent despite the existence of large deposits of natural resources.

“We must admit, however, that those aspirations are still unattainable. The question then remains, what else must we do collectively so that future generations would observe us like the heroic leaders of the past?” he posed.

Highlighting the need for Gambia and Kenya to deepen their diplomatic ties, Barrow noted that both countries could learn from each other’s experiences to advance their bilateral relations and mutual interests.

In a subtle reference to violence that is being witnessed in some parts of Africa, Barrow urged warring parties to embrace civil and legal ways of settling their differences.
