United Opposition politicians Rigathi Gachagua and Justin Muturi were guests at Lenny Kivuti’s home in Embu County, joining the grieving family following the death of the politician’s mother, Penina Ngungi.

In a statement on his X on Sunday, November 23, 2025, Gachagua conveyed his condolences to the family.

Canon Penina Ciambogo Ngúngi passed on on Monday, November 17, 2025. Her death was confirmed by Gachagua while on a campaign trail in Mbeere North.

Condolences

“Together with my brother, National Assembly Speaker Emeritus JB Muturi, and other esteemed leaders, I had the honour of visiting my brother Lenny Kivuti to extend my heartfelt condolences to his family following the passing of his beloved mother, Canon Penina Ciambogo Ngúngi.

In his tribute to the matriarch, the DCP leader extolled her devout disposition and the spiritual guidance she imparted to the many she came across.

“Canon Penina was more than a mother; she was a devoted woman of faith whose commitment to her church and community touched the lives of many.”

“Her kindness, compassion, and spiritual guidance left a lasting impact on all who knew her. She will be dearly missed for her warmth, wisdom, and dedication to serving others,” he added.

Gachagua on Kivuti’s mom’s death

While announcing the passing of Kivuti’s mother, Gachagua informed the crowd that the politician was unable to join the opposition team for the second day of campaigns in Mbeere, having been overtaken by the tragedy.

Demise

“We were to come here with Kivuti, but today in the morning God has rested his mom. So he has not been able to join us. He has requested we pray for him,” Gachagua told the residents.

The news sparked a wave of sombre mood, with former Attorney General Justin Muturi expressing his condolences.

Ngungi’s demise happened barely a year after the ex-senator’s family laid their son, Eric Mutugi, to rest on January 3, 2025.

Mutugi, an IT guru and the son of Kivuti and his wife, Hildah Kivuti, died on December 23, 2024, with President William Ruto among the leaders who condoled with the family then.
