Gachagua demands urgent intervention after deadly Nairobi floods
By Mabonga Makhanu, March 8, 2026Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on both the National Government and the Nairobi City County Government to urgently address the worsening flood situation in Nairobi.
In a statement shared on his social media pages on Sunday, March 8, 2026, the outspoken leader acknowledged that the city and its environs have been hit by heavy rains over the weekend, causing loss of lives and extensive property damage.
Gachagua emphasised the need for rapid government intervention to provide evacuation support, emergency shelters, drainage clearance, relief food distribution, medical care, and timely public information.

He described the situation as deeply painful, noting that the disaster comes at a time when many Kenyans are already facing difficult economic conditions.
“The National Government and the Nairobi City County Government must move with speed to provide evacuation support, emergency shelters, drainage clearance, relief food distribution, provision of medical care, and timely public information,” Gachagua stated.
Mitigating the situation
He highlighted that such tragedies could have been mitigated through proactive and sustained action by the responsible authorities, rather than relying on reactive measures after disasters occur.
According to him, urgent and practical solutions must go beyond statements and promises to protect lives and property effectively.
“This disaster could have been mitigated through a proactive, sustained, and genuine commitment by the responsible authorities, rather than the knee-jerk reactions we often witness after tragedy has already struck” he added

The former deputy president also called for proper development planning that takes into account climate change, rapid population growth, and economic development. He stressed that safeguarding Kenya for future generations requires long-term, expert-led strategies free from political interference.
Message to Kenyans

Gachagua further urged all Kenyans to exercise caution during the rainy season, check on one another, and provide verified information on weather and emergencies. He encouraged those able to assist with housing, food, or clothing to support affected families.
This comes at a time when the death toll rose to 28. Red Cross Secretary General Idris Ahmed has stated that the death toll will continue to escalate as the heavy rains persist.
Gachagua has also sent condolences to those who have lost their lives in the floods and a quick recovery message to those injured.
