Former National Police Service (NPS) spokesperson Charles Owino has urged politicians to embrace sobriety while engaging their rights to criticise the government.

Speaking while appearing on a local TV station, Owino faulted the behaviour of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his incessant attacks towards president William Ruto’s administration.

Since his impeachment in 2024, the estranged former DP has scaled up his affront on the Kenya Kwanza regime, recently stating he was ready to make sacrifices to make Ruto a one-term president.

Responding to the mounting opposition to the government way and from Gachagua, Owino, was dismayed by the former Mathira lawmaker’s reluctance to quit the government then only to turn out as one of its fiercest critics following his impeachment.

“The reason why people have problems with Gachagua is that, if he would have resigned on his own volition. Let’s say he wakes up and says I’m quitting. People would have believed him. But if you don’t do that and you come to behave the way he is doing now then people truly see that you were sabotaging the government you were in,” Owino said.

Owino has further pleaded with politicians to continue in keeping the government in check within the confines of the law.

“My message to politicians is one; lets support the government on a basis where we think we can help it to move forward. Nobody is going to gag anybody from pointing out where the government is going wrong. The constitution has its place for the opposition just as it provides for the existence of the government,” he added.

Owino’s condemnation of the former DP adds to the list of politicians who have called the former MP to order.

Musalia Mudavadi and Oscar Sudi previously defended the president over scathing remarks made against him by Gachagua.

Meanwhile, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki became the latest to fire a warning to Gachagua.

Speaking on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, during a consultative meeting with Tharaka Nithi leaders at his Karen residence the DP accused his predecessor of engaging in a dangerous political tactic.

“You cannot come to incite people in burials. Mtu amefiwa na loved one unaleta vijana hapo kupiga keleleSijui kwa wedding ama musician ameunda event na hata si yako unadandia unakuja kuleta kisirani. That habit is dangerous. Very bad habit. The area where I am born, hii area ya Central, we are not known for violence. Those behaviors were elsewhere,” Kindiki said.
