Nyeri Woman Rep Rahab Mukami has condemned an incident in which six minors were subjected to forced circumcision in Muthuthini village, Mukurweini sub-county.

The six, who are Class Eight students whose Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results were released last week, are recuperating at  Mukurweini Level Four Hospital.

Primitive practice

Mukami called for speedy investigations, terming the practice primitive and outdated. “It is disturbing to hear that female genital mutilation (FGM) has found its way into Nyeri County in this day and time,” she said.

She appealed to residents to discard outdated practices and instead embrace Christianity and education.

She sympathised with the girls, saying they need medication and psychosocial support.

Nyeri County children officer Mwaniki Kung’u said one of the suspects is on the run, adding that parents of the girls are also to blame for assenting to the crime.

Acting on a tip off

On Tuesday, Mukurwe-ini sub-county police commander Patrick Manyasia said they were informed of the incident by villagers. “Our officers rushed to the scene and  arrested three suspects, who are in custody at Mukurweini police station.

Police are also looking into the possibility of more families promoting the outlawed practice in the area.  — KNA
