February 6, 2025: Top news events to look out for today
Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.
Ruto’s tour
President William Ruto is expected to continue with his development tour in North-Eastern.
Over the past two days, the Head of State has visited both Mandera and Wajir counties, where he launched projects and made fresh promises to the residents.
One of the outstanding promises President Ruto assured the residents is the end of vetting in the process of acquiring the national identity cards.
At the Orahey Grounds on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, in Wajir Town, the president publicly signed and read out the presidential decree ending the vetting process that he said is discriminatory.
“Our fellow countrymen from Northern Kenya will no longer suffer the indignity of being subjected to extra vetting and ethnic profiling in order to acquire national identification documents,” he said.
His third day in the region is equally going to attract limelight, especially the promises he is going to make.
Reaction to Haiti fund freeze
After the US informed the United Nations that it was freezing its funds for the Haiti security mission, the government stated that the move will not jeopardize its operation.
The US was a primary financial contributor to the process, but its move to cut its fund is seen as a blow to the MSS mission in the Caribbean nation.
“The claims that the US funding freeze for the Kenya-led Haiti Multi-national Security Support mission (MSS) will jeopardize the operations are false and lack any factual basis. The MSS mission is supported by the UN Trust Fund for Haiti, established under United Nations Security Council Resolution 2699 in October 2023. This Kenya-led mission also includes police deployments from Guatemala, Jamaica, El Salvador, the Bahamas, and Belize, among others.
“Kenya and its partners remain fully committed to ensuring the mission transitions to a full UN-led operation to guarantee its long-term financial sustainability and security mandate,” the government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said in a statement on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.

More reactions on the same issue are expected on Friday, February 6, 2025.
