SHA-RUPHA stand-off

The stand-off between the Rural Private Hospitals Association (RUPHA) and the government over the Social Health Authority (SHA) is expected to attract limelight.

RUPHA suspended the government’s service scheme, but the Ministry of Health reiterated that they have engaged the body over the concerns raised.

“The Ministry has met and engaged with RUPHA, amongst other stakeholders, to address the concerns raised. One of the key concerns raised by RUPHA relates to delays in claims processing and reimbursement for services rendered under SHIF and the PHC Fund.

“The Ministry has introduced clear guidelines for facility accreditation, standardized claims submission processes, and an enhanced digital system for real-time claim tracking. These measures are designed to eliminate past inefficiencies and ensure that all service providers receive their payments on time,” the ministry said in a statement.

However, RUPHA has yet to respond to the government, and they are expected to give an update on how far their engagement has gone.

Although President William Ruto has continued to defend SHA, some Members of Parliament have continued to question its effectiveness in addressing challenges the health sector is facing.

“The people who will vote for you are the poor people who need medical health. and they rely on SHA. Mr. President, sort out SHA. A public policy should fix a problem. Wakenya wanatarajia SHA itatua iyo shida yenye ililetwa na NHIF. If SHA is unable to fix the problem that was brought by NHIF, then review that SHA policy,” Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, who is among the leaders to express his displeasure, said.

The match, after it was cancelled in November 2024, had been scheduled for Sunday, March 2, 2025, but days before the game, both clubs announced that the duel had been postponed again.

The uncertainty around the match stems from the fact that there is no ready stadium to host Kenya’s biggest club showdown.
