Experts gather in Nairobi to push for inclusive green energy transition

The Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP) will convene its 2025 Annual Policy Conference in Nairobi to tackle financing and inclusivity for green energy transition in the Global South at a time when available resources remain insufficient and shifting geopolitical dynamics threaten further progress.
The full-day event will bring together leading researchers, policymakers, private sector actors, and development partners to share cutting-edge findings, external perspectives, and actionable policy recommendations.
Discussions will explore innovative financing mechanisms, local realities of clean energy adoption, and strategies to foster an inclusive green transition.
According to Prof Jane Kabubo-Mariara, Executive Director of PEP, ensuring that no one is left behind in the global shift toward green energy is both a moral and economic imperative.
“Our goal is to foster a balanced, evidence-driven conversation that reflects the unique contexts and realities of countries in the Global South, with a particular focus on the inclusion of women, youth, and marginalised communities,” she said.
The conference will feature insights from the Sustainability Performances, Evidence, and Scenarios (SPES) project, Environment for Development (EfD) research, and the Centre for Global Development (CGD) in collaboration with PEP.
The conference will also integrate external expertise and complementary perspectives to enrich the discussions. Panellists include researchers and practitioners affiliated with PEP and parallel CEDCA cohorts and programmes, independent institutions, and public-private actors.
There will be two panel discussions addressing challenges in financing and implementing green energy infrastructure unique to the Global South and the integration of national realities and inclusivity towards a “just green transition.”
Dr Simone Borghesi, a director of Climate at the European University Institute, a Sustainability Performances, Evidence, and Scenarios (SPES) consortium partner, President of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE), and leading expert on climate economics and sustainable development, will give the keynote address.
