Empowerment of youth, women on cards during Jill Biden’s tour of Kenya
United States First Lady Jill Biden is expected in the country tomorrow for a three-day visit.
She will be making her first trip to Africa as First Lady but the sixth trip to the continent and third time to Kenya.
According to the US Embassy in Nairobi, her visit will strengthen the US partnerships in Africa and advance shared priorities in the region.
“Dr Biden’s engagements will focus on the empowerment of women and youth, efforts to address food insecurity and promote our shared democratic values,” said the US embassy in Nairobi, in a dispatch.
It also stated that the visit follows US-Africa Leaders’ summit last year where Biden hosted a two-day spousal programme. The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has ordered that the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) closes Terminal Two tomorrow and on Sunday. Terminal Two will be closed for six hours on Friday from 11am to 5pm, and for 12 hours on Sunday between 6am and 6pm to facilitate her movement.
“This is, therefore, to advise you to relocate your operations to Terminal 1 within the stipulated time period to allow smooth facilitation of the VVIP and operations,” said KAA in a statement.
The First Lady said she believes that supporting women and youth across is critical.
“ I’m heading to Africa for my sixth visit to the continent, and my first as First Lady. I have always believed that supporting women and youth across the world is critical to our common future, with education, health, and empowerment at the heart of it all,” she posted on Twitter just prior to departure.
She said her trip to Africa would start in Namibia, where a vibrant and engaged youth drive a young and strong democracy. She will then come to Kenya, where she expects to hear from those affected by the ongoing historic drought.
