The High Court yesterday granted former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa a Sh2 million personal bond for his release in the extortion case.

Issuing the orders, Justice Diana Kavedza directed Echesa to be escorted by his lawyers to DCI officers for interrogation and to record his statement not later than April 22 once he is discharged from hospital.

The orders, however, will lapse once the former Minister is arraigned in court.

Echesa was also ordered to comply with investigators. Echesa is currently admitted in Karen Hospital. He was arrested on March 27 over allegations of obtaining Sh240 million from Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa and detained at Muthaiga Police Station for interrogation.

Pending the hearing and determination of the application, DCI and any other law enforcement officers are restrained and prohibited from arresting or detaining him, the judge directed.

“Upon conclusion of investigations, the investigating officer should notify the suspect to appear before the relevant court for plea taking,” the court order. His lawyers, led by Danstan Omari, had claimed that their client was arrested while obeying summons from the County Criminal Investigation Officers Nairobi area.

Omari said his client is sickly and has been in and out of hospital and is required to go back in the hospital for check  up as per his doctor’s recommendations.
