Drama as two poachers wrestle armed officers in Kajiado

There was drama as a Kajiado multi agency team tried arresting two suspected poachers ferrying game meat using a motorcycle.

In a dramatic arrest, the two suspected poachers resisted arrest by speeding when stopped by the officers who were acting on a tip off from members of the public at Nasaru Olosho conservancy Mashuuru.

When the officers chased the two, they instead stopped and opted to wrestle the two officers despite being armed seeing one suspect manage to escape.

One suspect 40year old Mutua Mutie was arrested but continued fighting the officers leaving one of the officers with minor injuries in the hands and bruises on the face. He also sustained injuries in the push and pull where he struggled to evade arrest by rolling on the ground dragging the officer on the ground.

Confirming the incident, Kajiado subcounty police commander Daudi Loronyokwe said the notorious poachers got the officers off guard and began wrestling them.

“It is unusual for one to resist arrest by armed police officers but the two adamant poachers were literally fighting for their freedom,” said Loronyokwe.

The two were ferrying four Dikdik and one impala carcasses. They were also in possession of crude weapons and a torch with a siren.

” These poachers are notorious. They have a torch with a siren to confuse people and disguise as wardens,”said Loronyokwe.

He said Kenya Wildlife service officers have managed to contain snake poaching menace and the criminals have instead embarked on full force on poaching for wild meat.

” We have fought snake fillet that had taken Kajiado by storm and now the criminals have embarked on wild meat poaching. In the recent past the poaching menace has been rampant,”said Loronyokwe.

He said the multi agency team will not leave anything to chance in fighting poaching to ensure the national heritage is protected.

” I want to send a stern warning to the poachers, we are on high alert. We will arrest you and ensure you face the wrath of the law,” he said.

Loronyokwe said they are also working with the arrested poachers to help unravel the ready market for the meat mainly in Nairobi.

The suspect will be arraigned at Kajiado law court tomorrow.
