The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Bomet County has arrested a person of interest who was captured in a vehicle carrying some 1600 rolls of cannabis sativa following an intelligence-led operation.

Taking it to their X handle on Sunday, May 31, 2026, the detectives have confirmed that the police action took place on the Silibwet-Bomet Road when the officers spotted a Toyota Succeed car believed to have been transporting narcotic drugs.

“Detectives drawn from DCI Bomet have arrested a suspected drug trafficker and recovered eight (8) bags containing approximately one thousand six hundred (1,600) rolls of cannabis sativa (bhang) during an intelligence-led operation within Bomet County,” DCI noted in a statement.

Dramatic chase

The DCI has noted that the driver refused to halt and raced off towards Kapsimotwa Shopping Centre, setting up a high-speed chase. The pursuit ended when the car drove into a small area of the road, prompting the driver to make a few sharp turns and the passengers to exit and run away.

Two passengers were able to get away, though detectives arrested the driver, who was identified as a person of interest in the continuing investigations.

The detectives further indicated that a search of the abandoned vehicle revealed eight bags of about 1600 bhang rolls. About 200 rolls of the narcotic substance are reported to have been in each bag.

“While two unidentified passengers managed to escape, detectives apprehended the driver. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the recovery of the eight (8) bags, each containing approximately two hundred (200) rolls of the narcotic substance,” the DCI statement added.

The drugs were recovered, and the car has been seized as evidence, and detectives are still investigating and attempting to identify and arrest the two suspects who managed to flee during the operation.

The arrested person of interest has been processed and is expected to be arraigned in court as investigations continue.

“The suspect has been processed for arraignment, while the recovered drugs and the motor vehicle have been detained as exhibits pending further investigations and arrest of the other suspects,” DCI added.
