Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.
Ruto’s end-of-year message
As a tradition, President William Ruto is expected to issue his end-of-year address on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
The Head of State is expected to highlight some of his achievements in the last 365 days.
Most Kenyans will be eager to hear Ruto’s plan to fully turn around the economy, create jobs and empower businesses. Additionally, citizens would be keen to learn about his plans regarding the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), the University Funding Model and whether policies in the education sector are working for or against Kenyans.
The Social Health Authority (SHA) rollout has so far received mixed reactions from Kenyans, however, Ruto is expected to inspire hope during his end-of-the-year address.
Protests and abductions have also characterised 2024, Ruto is expected to address the issue as his government looks to turn a new leaf in 2025.
Besides Ruto, other national leaders are expected to give their end-year messages and unveil plans for 2025.
Police IG summoned
On Tuesday, December 31, 2024, Kenyans will be keen to see if the abducted individuals will be released following High Court orders.
Issuing the orders, Justice Bahati Mwamuye also barred their prosecution pending the outcome of a related case filed by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).
The six individuals include Gideon Kibet, Bernard Kavuli, Peter Muteti, Billy Mwangi, Rony Kiplangat, and Steve Kavingo.
Justice Bahati Mwamuye granted a Habeas Corpus order requiring that the petitioners be produced in court by 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, unless the authorities provide a valid reason for their detention.
The Inspector-General of Police, Douglas Kanja was also personally summoned to court to explain the whereabouts of the petitioners.
The High Court has allowed an application by the @LawSocietyofKe and granted orders in the nature of haveas corpus directing the @NPSOfficial_KE to unconditionally release Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, Billy Mwangi, Gideon Kibet, Rony Kiplangat, and Steve Kavingo.

This followed protests that were staged in different parts of the country on Monday, December 30, 2024, calling for an end to abductions. Busia County Senator Okiya Omtatah was among those who demonstrated in Nairobi.
In Mombasa, residents also held peaceful protests while demanding the release of the missing persons and asking the state to end abductions.
