Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.
MPs’ meeting with CS Barasa
Members of Parliament (MPs) will today Tuesday, December 3, 2024, convene for a Kamukunji at Parliament Buildings to discuss challenges affecting the implementation of the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) programme.
This was announced by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula on Monday, December 2, 2024, who stated that he had received and acceded to a request from Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Mulongo seeking to engage the MPs on various matters relating to the implementation of the UHC programme.
Wetang’ula stated that CS Deborah Barasa, along with key stakeholders in the health sector, will address the MPs and provide updates on the transition from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).
Closure of boarding sections
Reactions on the Ministry of Educations move to direct the closure of boarding sections of 340 public and private primary schools for failing to meet safety standards, are expected to continue.
A circular by the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Basic Education Belio Kipsang dated November 27, 2024, stated that the institutions grossly contravened the provisions of the Safety Standards Manual for Schools in Kenya (2008).
Following a compliance assessment conducted in September and October this year, the schools did not also adhere to the standards as prescribed in the Registration Guidelines for Basic Education Institutions (2021).
Graft cases in court
There are various graft cases that have been lined up for judgement, hearing and mentions today.
There will be a Judgment of the case involving Antonie Gerard Jemeau and five others, in a suit for recovery of public land, L.R NO.2250/8 situated along Mukoma Road in Karen, being public property that has been illegally alienated to the private individuals.
There will be also a mention of a case involving Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary Ali Hassan Joho, in a petition challenging his suitability to hold public office, and faulting the National Assembly Committee on Appointments for violating the constitution by failing to consider the Petitioner’s memorandum of unsuitability.
The petition seeks that the aforesaid appointment be declared unconstitutional, null and void and that an order be issued restraining Joho from discharging the duties and functions of his current office.
The case will be mentioned in the Constitutional and Petition High Court at Milimani, Nairobi.
