Most of the goons who took part in the June 25 demonstrations were sponsored by top politicians, and police have warned that all the backers, even if it includes former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, will face the law if they are found to have been involved

Director of Criminal Investigations Mohammed Amin has also said some of the police firearms stolen during last week’s Gen-Z demonstrations have been used in violent robberies within the Naivasha region.

“We are fully aware that most of these goons who did the mayhem were sponsored, and top politicians were behind it. Rigathi Gachagua does not enjoy any immunity from prosecution. If in our investigations, he is found to have been involved in the violence, appropriate action will be taken against him,” the DCI boss said.

He added that preliminary investigations, including statements obtained from these arrested suspects, reveal a deliberate and well-funded plot to incite chaos, civil unrest and widespread anarchy under the guise of public protest.

Amin, however, said a grenade launcher, four guns and other police equipment, including uniforms and anti-riot gear that were stolen, have so far been recovered and the perpetrators apprehended. A total of 485 suspects have so far been arrested, and 448 of them have been charged in court, while 37 others are under active investigation.

“The charges range from murder, terrorism, rape, gang-rape, arson, obstruction of police officers on duty, breaking and stealing, robbery, robbery with violence, stealing from locked motor vehicles, incitement to violence, handling stolen goods, malicious damage to property, and possession of illegal firearms,” Amin said.

Coordinated plan

In Ndunyu Njeru police station in North Kinangop Sub-county, for example, protesters burned the station, leading to the death of three suspects.

The DCI boss further revealed several notable findings from the investigations so far, including that the violence witnessed in various parts of the country, including Nairobi, was by design and not random.

“These actions were not spontaneous; they were orchestrated, and we are actively pursuing the mobilisers and financiers of these acts, and they will be brought to justice soon,” Amin went on.

Gachagua initially spoke on the June 25, 2025, protests on Thursday, where he called out the state for allegedly using excessive force to quell protesters.

The former DP alleged a well-orchestrated plot to block protesters along Kiambu Road and Thika Road to leave them stranded while goons wreaked havoc in the Nairobi Central Business District.

The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader spoke on the looting that was witnessed in the Nairobi CBD, alleging that specific businesses were deliberately targeted.

Amin yesterday called on victims of the violence, including those whose property and shops were damaged, to come forward to aid in investigations.

Last week, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen claimed that the organisers of Wednesday’s nationwide protests were attempting to orchestrate a coup.

Speaking during a press briefing after touring parts of Nairobi to assess the aftermath of the protests, Murkomen alleged that the demonstrations were a calculated and coordinated attempt to overthrow the government.

“The plan was to take symbols of authority and democracy — which are the Parliament and State House — to show that they had achieved some sort of regime change,” Murkomen said.

On June 30, 2025, Amin said there was widespread destruction of critical government infrastructure, such as Kikuyu Law Courts, Kikuyu County Government Offices, and multiple police stations, including OlKalou Police Station, Dagoretti, Gachui, and Kamukunji, among others.

Several wholesale and retail outlets in Nairobi CBD, Kitengela, Dagoreti, Naivasha, Kikuyu, Nyeri, among others, were brazenly looted and vandalised.

“In addition, we received credible reports of assault and sexual violence committed by criminals who had earlier infiltrated the demonstrations,” he said.

The DCI boss also pleaded with Kenyans of goodwill to unite with them in eradicating the rogue elements within the society.

“We call upon members of the public to continue sharing information that leads to the tracking of stolen firearms, stolen goods from businesses, and apprehension of suspects,” he said.

Yesterday, PLP leader Martha Karua warned that any attempt to harass the opposition, and particularly Gachagua, would not be tolerated.

Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP leader Eugene Wamalwa and Karua criticised President William Ruto for the extrajudicial killings and bad governance, adding that his administration has failed to stabilise the economy and instead has sanitised corruption.

The opposition leaders were speaking in Narok Town during a meet-the-people tour.
