Cherargei expresses worry about Nandi County’s image amid reports of incompetent staff
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has decried the bringing of Nandi County to disrepute over reports of incompetent staff within the county personnel.
Speaking during the grilling of the county’s financial audit on Monday, August 25, 2025, in Nairobi, the senator said that the uncovered reports of incompetent personnel risk soiling the reputation of the county.
According to the senator, the county boasts of brilliant professionals, adding that reports of human errors emanating from officers in the financial department did not bode well with the county’s reputation.
“My people are well-learned, and among our sub-tribes, our community, we lead in the most brilliant professionals. So when you use the word, there might be incompetent people in the office. I get worried,” he said.
The matter arose while Governor Stephen Sang appeared before the Senate’s Public Accounts Committee to account for money allocated in the financial year 2023/24.

During the grilling, Sang defended county staff against accusations of incompetence stemming from discrepancies in financial statements and audit queries in the specified report.
In light of the revelations, Cherargei, who had earlier further challenged the governor to state his appraisal of his staff, challenged the county boss to crack down on individuals to avoid exposing the county in a bad light.
Unqualified?
“Governor, you need to protect our county; you are leaving people to think our county has unqualified people in office,” he lamented.
In his response, Governor Sang, while striking a rare chord with the senate, affirmed his commitment to rectify the issues, including taking relevant actions for the culpable individuals.
“The Senator has made a good defense of the county. We are qualified people, and as I indicated, we will include necessary administrative action,” he clarified while reacting to the senator’s concerns.
In his intervention, the committee chair, Godfrey Osotsi warned the governor and his CEC to get their acts together and avoid the occurrence of such issues in the next engagement for the 2024/25 queries.
Threatens to take action
Ososti noted that the committee would be forced to take stern action against the individual officers involved.
“In the previous engagement, we gave them the opportunity to organise the team of finance, so in the next financial year, if this recurs, we know very little was done, and someone must face an administrative action,” he cautioned.
