Cherargei blasts Kenyans who doubted Harambee Stars’ ability
By Mabonga Makhanu, August 3, 2025Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has praised the Harambee Stars following their victory over DRC Congo in the opening match while calling out Kenyans who doubted the team’s ability to win.
In a statement made on Sunday, August 3, 2025, Cherargei congratulated the national football team for their performance, describing the win as a proud and momentous occasion for the country. He commended the players for their resilience and determination, which he said reflected Kenya’s fighting spirit.
The senator also criticised a section of Kenyans who he accused of being unpatriotic and hoping for the team’s failure due to personal and narrow interests. He expressed disappointment that some individuals would go as far as wishing against the success of the national team.
Cherargei reaffirmed his support for Harambee Stars, congratulating the players and the entire Team Kenya for their achievement. He stated that the victory was a source of national pride and called for continued support for the team as they progress in the competition.
“Congratulations Harambee Stars National Football Team for winning the opening match against DRC Congo. The country is proud of you for this momentous win. It was shocking that some unpatriotic Kenyans & naysayers did not want our national football team to win because of their own parochial interests & pessimism against Kenya’s resilient spirit,” Cherargei said.

The win
The match was a tightly contested affair, with Harambee Stars showing composure and discipline throughout.
The lone goal came in the first half from Austin Odhiambo, the creative playmaker from Gor Mahia, who fired home after a slick move in the additional half-time minutes.
Austin danced through DR Congo’s defence before slotting home a nicely worked shot at the bottom corner.
The crowd erupted as Kenya took the lead against one of Africa’s most experienced sides, two-time CHAN champions DR Congo.
The win gives Harambee Stars an early advantage in the qualifiers and renewed hope of progressing further in the tournament.
As the CHAN tournament continues, all eyes will be on Odhiambo to see if he can maintain the momentum and inspire Harambee Stars to further success.
